The World Bank (WB) has reiterated its commitment to supporting sustainable development in Mozambique by financing priority projects in the infrastructure, water and sanitation sectors. The WB director for Mozambique, Idah Pswarayi-Riddihough, stressed during a meeting with the Minister of Public Works, Housing and Water Resources, Carlos Mesquita, the importance of ensuring the success of these projects, recognizing their potential to generate a significant impact on local communities.
During the meeting, progress was highlighted in the contracting processes for the rehabilitation of National Road Number 1, with emphasis on the review to ensure that deadlines are met. In the water sector, various projects were discussed, including the rehabilitation and expansion of water supply systems in various regions, as well as the construction of fecal sludge treatment plants and sanitary blocks in provinces such as Zambézia and Nampula.
Urban sanitation projects were also discussed, such as the Infulene wastewater treatment plant, the Katembe landfill and the sewage networks in Maputo and Quelimane. Also discussed was the regional program for climate resilience in Eastern and Southern Africa, which includes studies for the rehabilitation of dams and executive projects for dykes in various river basins.
The WB thus reaffirmed its commitment to contributing to Mozambique’s sustainable development by financing and supporting projects aimed at improving the population’s quality of life and boosting the country’s economic growth.
