The public company Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM) has announced that the energy exported by the country to neighboring nations will grow by 9% in 2023, reaching 1891 GigaWatt-hours (GWh), compared to 1730 GWh in 2022. The entity’s report and accounts, revealed on Friday (17) by Lusa, highlights Mozambique’s positive performance in the southern African region, aiming to consolidate the country as a regional energy hub.
In addition to the growth in exports, the document highlights the increase in energy sales to Botswana and the successful conclusion of the debt collection process with the Zambia Electricity Supply Corporation (ZESCO), worth 22 million dollars.
EDM also announced positive net results for 2023, totaling 4.8 billion meticais. At its Annual General Meeting, the company highlighted a 14% increase in turnover, from 46.8 billion meticais in 2022 to 53.1 billion meticais in 2023.
The Expansion of the National Electricity Network (REN) and Massification of New Connections projects contributed to 395,732 new consumers benefiting from electricity for the first time in 2023. As a result, the number of EDM customers increased from 2.9 million in 2022 to 3.2 million in 2023, representing growth of 9%.
