Coral North: Eni’s new gas project receives support from Japan in Cabo Delgado

The Coral North FLNG project, developed by the Italian company Eni SpA in partnership with the Japanese Organization for Metals and Energy Security (JOGMEC), is seeking financial support from Japan. The initiative, located in the Rovuma basin, promises to strengthen natural gas production in Mozambique.

Coral North, designed as a replica of Coral South, will be 50 km from the coast and interconnected to six underwater wells at a depth of 2,000 meters. Area 4 is expected to produce seven million tons of gas a year.

Eni and JOGMEC recently signed a memorandum of cooperation aimed at making it possible to seek support from Japanese financial institutions. The objectives include diversifying energy sources and committing to carbon neutrality in the context of economic growth.

The project requires an investment of 7 billion dollars and is awaiting approval from the Mozambican government. If the schedule is followed, the platform will begin production in the second half of 2027, ahead of onshore projects, which face challenges due to insecurity in the region.

The construction of Coral North could employ up to 1,400 people, mainly foreign professionals, and up to 900 during the operation phase, generating opportunities for Mozambican workers.

In the midst of a challenging security context in Cabo Delgado, Coral North represents new hope for the exploitation of Mozambique’s vast gas reserves, aligning with global efforts for sustainable energy and energy security.
