EDM plans 22,000 new electricity connections in Niassa province

EDM Projecta 22 mil novas ligações eléctricas para província do Niassa

Electricity of Mozambique (EDM) plans to expand its electricity network in Niassa province, with 22,000 new domestic connections in ten administrative posts. The information was published by Rádio Moçambique (RM).

Heitor Matimele, director of EDM in the city of Lichinga, pointed out that electrification work in the administrative posts of Muaquia, in Mauje, and Meluluca, in the district of Lago, is at an advanced stage. He also revealed that electrification projects will soon be launched at eight other administrative posts, with completion expected later this year. Importantly, Matondovela and Gomba, in the Mecula district, will be electrified using renewable energy.

Currently, 31 of the 41 administrative posts in Niassa province are already electrified by the national grid, benefiting around one million people.

The expansion of EDM’s electricity network in Niassa province represents a significant step forward in improving access to electricity in the region, which will have a positive impact on the quality of life of local communities. Furthermore, this initiative is in line with the goal of electrifying rural areas and promoting the use of renewable energies in Mozambique.

The electrification of these regions will not only provide immediate benefits in terms of access to energy, but will also contribute to the sustainable economic and social development of these areas, boosting the growth and quality of life of local communities.

With this project, EDM is reaffirming its commitment to development and improving living conditions in Mozambique, demonstrating the strategic importance of electricity as an engine for progress and people’s well-being.
