EDM recorded losses of 5 billion meticais due to vandalization of infrastructure

EDM Registou prejuízos de 5 mil milhões de meticais devido à vandalização de infra-estruturas

Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM) recently revealed that in 2023 it incurred losses estimated at 5 billion meticais due to the vandalization of electrical infrastructure and energy theft.

Noel Govene, EDM’s executive director, said that the losses recorded in 2023 would be enough to extend the national electricity grid, pointing out that these actions contribute to the country’s development.

Govene spoke of the damage caused to the institution during the signing ceremony of a memorandum of understanding between EDM and the Institute of Scholarships (IBE), which aims to ensure the award of paid professional internships to recent IBE graduates, both inside and outside the country, with priority given to electrical engineering.

The memorandum also prioritizes gender equality, with special attention to the participation of women in the selection of students for training. Govene said he expected active participation from the IBE and students in monitoring and reporting acts of vandalization of electrical infrastructure and energy theft.

EDM is committed to contributing to the well-being of Mozambicans, and the memorandum with IBE represents yet another example of the company’s commitment to solidarity causes, with a useful and necessary impact on the continuation of national electrification work.
