ENI starts producing oil for biofuels in Mozambique

ENI inicia produção de óleo para biocombustíveis em Moçambique

The multinational ENI Rovuma Basin has announced the start of production of vegetable oil in Mozambique, to be used as a raw material in biorefineries in Italy. This initiative is part of the company’s strategy to contribute to the decarbonization of transport, including Mozambique in the sustainable mobility value chain.

The project has the support of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, as part of a Specific Agreement signed in February 2022 for the development and cultivation of oilseed crops. ENI ensures that the vegetable oil extracted from by-products of local agro-processing plants is certified according to ISCC EU (International Sustainability Carbon Certification European Union) standards, guaranteeing sustainable production and respect for the environment and human rights.

In addition, the project in Mozambique will involve thousands of local farmers, creating an industrial platform for the production of agricultural raw materials and promoting the growth and regeneration of degraded rural areas. ENI also intends to support local farmers by transferring knowledge, introducing mechanization and implementing better agricultural practices.

ENI has been present in Mozambique since 2006 and is the delegated operator of the Coral Sul project, the first to produce gas in the Rovuma Basin. In addition to its upstream activities, the company is committed to playing a crucial role in the energy transition towards a low-carbon future, to achieve net carbon neutrality by 2030. Mozambique plays a key role in ENI’s decarbonization strategy, through agricultural raw material production programs, forestry projects and carbon offset initiatives. These actions aim to neutralize residual emissions and create a positive impact on communities in terms of development.
