Filipe Nyusi highlights progress in electrifying the country during his mandate

In his latest report to the nation, presented this Wednesday (7) at the Assembly of the Republic in Maputo, the President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, highlighted the significant growth in electricity coverage in the country, which increased from 51% to 64% between 2015 and 2023.

The head of state underlined the commitment made in his inaugural speech in January 2015, in which he promised to invest in “development programmes and strategies based on the districts and localities, where our people live and face real problems, capitalizing on the potential and opportunities of each area,” he recalled.

During his speech, Filipe Nyusi emphasized government initiatives aimed at building and maintaining infrastructure, with the aim of improving the population’s quality of life. The President mentioned some of the advances made in recent years, including the electrification of district headquarters and the expansion of the power supply to the headquarters of administrative posts.

“The electricity coverage rate in our country more than doubled between 2015 and 2023. When I took office in 2015, our EDM had less than 1.5 million customers; last year, 2023, the number of customers rose to 3.2 million,” revealed the President, also pointing out that Mozambique is working to become a source of energy for the entire southern region of the continent. “It’s no longer a promise, it’s a certainty,” he said.

Nyusi stressed that “no country, no economy can be sustainable without a network of infrastructures that extends throughout the national territory”, highlighting the importance of investment in districts, localities and the population as a whole.

The President also assured that building a support base for development is one of the legacies of his governance, promoting energy, water, the construction of schools, hospitals, roads and bridges. “Our administration is committed to continuing to improve the living conditions of the population, guaranteeing infrastructure and essential services in all regions of the country,” concluded Nyusi.
