Handover of Mozambique-Malawi high-voltage line postponed until October

The delivery of the construction work for the 218-kilometer high-voltage transmission line, part of the Mozambique-Malawi Interconnection Project, has been postponed again. According to information published by Rádio Moçambique (RM) on Monday, January 29, the deadline, which had already been postponed to March this year, has been extended to October.

According to RM, the Health, Safety and Environment manager, Pattison Muchochoma, said that more than 80% of the work had already been completed. The substation in Matambo, in the Changara district of Tete province, is in its final stages of construction.

Muchochoma explained that once the metal structure is completed, the next step will be the electrical installation, followed by the extension of the cables that will connect Mozambique to Malawi. The first phase will cover 141 kilometers from Matambo to Zobuè, in the Moatize district, and then 77 kilometers from Zobuè to Phombeya, in the Balaka district of Malawi.

Currently, the transformers and towers that will receive the cables have been assembled, and all that remains is to finalize the electricity distribution control center.

Budgeted at 154 million dollars and financed by the World, German and European Banks, the project will add 120 megawatts to Malawi’s national electricity grid. The project is expected to open a chapter in the country’s electricity supply, contributing not only to its economic growth, but also to the industrialization of the southern African region.
