HCB exceeds planned targets for third quarter by 14.3% and strengthens energy production

Hidroeléctrica de Cahora Bassa (HCB) S.A., one of the largest independent energy producers in the southern region, recorded hydro-energy production of around 12,120.4 GWh by the end of the third quarter of 2023, corresponding to 14.3% more than planned, in a year with a production target of 14,292 GWh.

This time, it is expected to exceed the target of 15,488 GWh, which will strengthen Mozambique’s strategic position as a regional energy hub.

“In the period under review, HCB managed to achieve a turnover of just over 54.2% of the revenues planned for the period, while successfully closing negotiations on the adjustment of the energy export tariff. These factors combined represent significant gains for the company and the country.

The figures presented will contribute to making critical investments in production chain equipment and in projects to increase energy generation capacity, which is expected to reach 4,000 MW by 2032” – Tomás Matola, Chairman of HCB’s Board of Directors.

With regard to water availability, at the start of the 2023/2024 rainy season, HCB had a storage quota of 323.47 m, corresponding to a useful capacity of 87%, resulting from the amount of water coming from the upstream dams and the flows generated in the Cahora Bassa Basin.

The current quota is satisfactory and, combined with careful, technical-scientific management and the technological means at the company’s disposal, will ensure the power generation process until the end of the year.
