In 2023, Hidroeléctrica de Cahora Bassa (HCB) stood out as the company that paid the most dividends to the Mozambican state. Responsible for operating the Cahora Bassa dam on the Zambezi River in Tete province, HCB made a significant contribution to the public coffers of 4.6 billion meticais. This figure represents half of all the payments made by the State Business Sector (SEE) in the period under review.
The balance sheet report of the Economic and Social Plan and State Budget (PESOE) also highlighted other companies as major contributors, including the Ports and Railways of Mozambique (CFM), with 1.3 billion meticais, the Mozambique-Zimbabwe Pipeline Company (CPMZ), with 1.2 billion, and the National Hydrocarbons Company (ENH), with 577 million meticais.
In addition to dividends, HCB also stood out in concession revenue, contributing 2.3 billion meticais, an increase of 37% compared to 2022. This payment represented 44% of total concession revenue, demonstrating HCB’s financial strength and significant contribution to Mozambique’s economic development.
This reinforces the crucial role that HCB plays in the Mozambican economy and highlights the importance of solid, well-managed state companies for the country’s progress.
