INC outlines new strategies to boost cereal production in Mozambique

The Cereals Institute of Mozambique (INC) is outlining new strategies to boost cereal production in the country, as provided for in the Economic and Social Plan and the State Budget. According to the plan approved by Parliament last year, the agricultural sector aims to produce more than three million tons of cereals this year, as well as oilseeds, vegetables, roots and tubers, almonds and around six hundred thousand tons of legumes, among other products.

To achieve these ambitious goals, the INC is focused on strengthening partnerships and synergies with agricultural marketing players. Recently, the institution met under the slogan “Strengthening partnerships and synergies with agricultural marketing players towards boosting agricultural production”, to assess the strategic actions needed to achieve these goals.

Among the actions planned by the INC are the hiring of 455 extension workers to assist 1.2 million families and the integration of 455,463 into different production chains. In addition, the institute plans to release fifteen varieties of crops with high nutritional and productive value and resilient to climate change, produce five hundred tons of basic seed and certify 15,000 tons of seed.

The government has delegated to the INC the mission of ensuring the general coordination of the marketing process, acting as the buyer of last resort, ensuring the creation of a physical food reserve and promoting storage conditions for cereals and legumes in rural areas. In addition, the INC must promote partnerships and synergies for the disposal of agricultural surpluses and collaborate in coordinating the placement of cereals, legumes and other products on the national and international markets, helping to stabilize prices.

With these measures, it is estimated that global production will increase by 5.7% this year, driven mainly by cereals, with an expected volume of just over three million tons.
