Maputo municipality plans to invest 17.9 billion meticais in infrastructure over the next five years, including drainage ditches, roads, improvements to markets and an increase in waste collection capacity.
According to the newspaper Notícias, the investment is part of the Municipal Development Plan (PDM 2024-28), approved this Wednesday, July 31, at another plenary session of the Municipal Assembly. The plan highlights that, of the total amount, 10 million meticais will come from revenue collected through taxes, municipal fees and other fiscal obligations, while the rest will be obtained from cooperation partners.
For the councillor for infrastructure, João Guambe, the municipal council is also considering the possibility of integrating more socio-economic impact projects with improved internal revenue collection, with the aim of promoting the sustainable, inclusive, equitable and resilient development of the municipality.
“The meeting also discussed issues related to the sustainable closure of the Hulene dump and the start of construction of the Katembe landfill this year, as well as strategies to mitigate the impact of flooding,” he said.
He also pointed out that nine kilometers of road will be paved from the traffic circle in the Chali neighbourhood, in the Katembe area, to the future landfill site.
Recently, Maputo municipality revealed that it is facing a significant financial challenge in solid waste management, needing 44 million meticais a month to pay the companies responsible for collecting garbage in all the neighborhoods.
The entity said that currently the revenue generated by the garbage tax charged by Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM) is only 14 million meticais, resulting in a deficit of 30 million that needs to be covered by other sources of funding.
This investment in infrastructure aims not only to improve the quality of life of Maputo’s inhabitants, but also to prepare the city to face future challenges of urbanization and population growth.
