The Embassy of the United States of America (USA) in Maputo congratulated Augusta Maíta on her recent appointment as executive director of the Millennium Challenge Account (MCA) Mozambique, as announced on Thursday, July 25.

According to Lusa, Maíta’s appointment was approved by the Council of Ministers on July 23, 2024. Maíta, who previously held the position of Minister of the Sea, Inland Waters and Fisheries, will take on the leadership of MCA Mozambique, an institution responsible for managing US financial support of 31.7 billion meticais (500 million dollars).

The Embassy statement highlights that Augusta Maíta’s appointment was the result of a “competitive and transparent recruitment process”, involving interview panels with representatives from the public and private sectors, as well as the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) and the US government. The position was one of twenty openings at the beginning of the year, attracting more than 4,500 applications.

In March, the government announced the creation of a new institution to manage a total amount of 33.9 billion meticais (537 million dollars), of which 31.7 billion meticais (500 million dollars) comes from the MCC. This new entity will function as a temporary institution for the next seven years.

Compact II, signed on September 20 at the Capitol in Washington in the presence of President Filipe Nyusi, includes significant projects such as the construction of a new bridge over the Licungo River in Zambézia province and the creation of a new ring road in the same province, which has been severely affected by cyclones in recent years.
