Swedish government plans to fund renewable energy project in northern Mozambique

Governo da Suécia pretende financiar projecto de energias renováveis no Norte de Moçambique

The Swedish government plans to invest more than 420 million meticais in a renewable energy project called ‘GERASOL’, which will be implemented in northern Mozambique over four years. The initiative will be led by SNV, a Dutch non-profit development organization that works with vulnerable communities, governments and the private sector in 24 countries, in collaboration with the Industrial and Commercial Institute of Nampula.

The Swedish ambassador to Mozambique, Mette Sunnegren, pointed out that the project aims to boost community development, with the expectation of creating jobs for 3,000 young people. In addition, part of the funding will go towards training young people in repairing clean energy systems, with the aim of meeting the demand for trained technicians in this area in the country.

Tomé Chacuchacha, director of the Secretary of State’s office in Nampula, assured that the government will establish mechanisms to guarantee the sustainability of the project in the communities.

Data from a report released in 2023 by the Lusophone Renewable Energy Association (ALER) and the Mozambican Renewable Energy Association (AMER) shows that Mozambique has made significant progress in the renewable energy sector. In 2022, renewable energies maintained their position as the main source of energy production, accounting for 62% of generation, despite the increase in thermal generation. In addition, the country exported 27% of its production to neighboring countries in 2022, seeking to position itself as an energy hub in the Southern African region.
