The spokesperson for the Communications Regulatory Authority (INCM), Massingue Apala, recently clarified in an interview with Televisão de Moçambique (TVM) that telecommunications prices in the country have not increased, but have decreased. According to Apala, the approval of Resolution No. 1/BR/CA/INCM/2024 resulted in a reduction in the prices of telecommunications services, where the cost per megabyte fell from one metical to 0.72 cents.
Apala argued that the tariffs currently being charged are below the cost of service, thus refuting the information released by some media outlets that internet and voice services would become more expensive in the coming days. He clarified that the operators will develop packages within the limits set by the INCM, ranging from 0.6 to 0.72 cents, and no package will come into force without the approval of the regulatory authority.
These statements contradict allegations of price increases, which suggested that call services could range from 0.72 to 0.96 cents/meticais per minute, and mobile data would cost 0.71 cents per megabyte, which would mean a high cost for a gigabyte of data.
