The Mozambican government is speeding up the administrative processes to transform the district of Zumbo, in Tete province, into the third largest coal basin in the region. The project, which involves the exploitation of mineral coal, is in the final stages of the process to obtain environmental certification and a mining concession, according to information from Rádio Moçambique.
According to the district administrator of Zumbo, Lucas Muidingue, the project will be the first of its kind in the town of Mucangaze and will include an open pit mine. He guaranteed that the operations will follow strict safety and environmental sustainability standards, with the aim of balancing economic development and the preservation of natural resources.
The initiative is part of the government’s strategy to expand the mining sector in Tete province, which is already recognized for its vast coal potential. The new mine is expected to create jobs and have a positive impact on the local economy, boosting sectors such as logistics, construction and services.
The administrative processes are currently at an advanced stage at central and provincial level, and it is hoped that the environmental certificates and mining concessions will be issued soon. With this, Zumbo will be able to consolidate itself as a new coal mining hub, reinforcing Tete’s position as one of the country’s main mining centers.
The project is part of the government’s efforts to attract private investment and foster the sustainable development of the extractive industry, ensuring that the exploitation of natural resources benefits communities and boosts the country’s economic growth.
