ExxonMobil analyzes dates for crucial announcement of gas project in Mozambique

ExxonMobil intends to announce the Final Investment Decision (FID) for the natural gas project in Mozambique, according to the company’s Vice President for External Relations, Walter Kansteiner. This analysis includes considerations of the security situation in Cabo Delgado, where the project is located.

Kansteiner made these statements after a meeting in Washington, USA, with the President of Mozambique, Filipe Nyusi, during the International Conference on the Miombo Forest. This conference aims to promote the defense of a forest that covers two million square kilometers and 11 countries in southern Africa, on which 300 million people depend.

The initiative, according to Kansteiner, makes ExxonMobil enthusiastic because of the positive impact it will have on the preservation of Africa’s great forests. He stressed the importance of this effort for the planet and expressed his satisfaction at the presence of President Nyusi at the event.

Globally, ExxonMobil plans to double its liquefied natural gas (LNG) portfolio by 2030, with current production of 24 million tons per year. In Mozambique, ExxonMobil’s project in Cabo Delgado was expected to produce 15.2 million tons per year, but today it is forecasting annual production of 18 million tons.

Mozambique has three natural gas development projects in the Rovuma basin, all located off the coast of Cabo Delgado. These projects are led by companies such as TotalEnergies and ExxonMobil and aim to export liquefied natural gas to the international market.
