BRT project rehabilitates 17 kilometers of roads in Maputo and Matola

At least 17 kilometers of roads will be rehabilitated and asphalted in the cities of Maputo and Matola, southern Mozambique, as part of the project to improve urban mobility in the Greater Maputo Metropolitan Region.

The project will be implemented by the Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) and envisages the rehabilitation of Avenida 24 de Julho, between Avenidas da Tanzania and Zambia, in the city of Maputo, the country’s capital, over a length of 3.2 kilometers, whose contract will be approved within days.

Fátima Artur, coordinator of the “MOVE Maputo” Mobility Project, who disclosed the fact, highlighted that the works include the construction of a third lane in the upward direction.

Rehabilitation work will also be required on Avenida da ONU and the connections between Fernão Magalhães and 25 de Setembro, covering an approximate length of 1.7 kilometers.

On the Matola Municipality side, the awarding of asphalting works is underway for the Molumbela/Kongolote sections, covering a length of 2.4 kilometres, Circular Road/Boquisso (6.7 kilometres) and Matlemele/Nwamatidjana Circular Road (3.0 kilometres).

The interventions are integrated into the project to build corridors dedicated to Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) passenger transport vehicles, financed by the World Bank to the tune of 250 million US dollars.

The corridor will comprise a segregated section of 22 kilometers, which extends from downtown Maputo to the Missão Roque roundabout, passing through the Combatentes and Juventude squares.

Later on non-segregated roads, with a length of 32 kilometers, connecting Missão Roque to Albazine, Zimpeto, Matola Gare and Marracuene, with six routes.

Artur said that the works should take shape from the second half of next year, after the completion of the survey of the infrastructures to be affected by the project’s route.

He also said that the sector is currently looking for a consultant who should map everything that exists in the BRT corridor and identify resettlement needs.

The initiative also includes, in addition to BRT, actions to strengthen the institutional and regulatory framework of Urban Transport and the professionalization of the public transport industry.
