Germany provides 90 million euros for projects in Mozambique

The German government has announced that it will make 90 million euros available to finance coastal protection projects, green infrastructure and economic and social development in Mozambique. The German ambassador in Maputo, Ronald Münch, made the announcement during his visit to Beira, the capital of Sofala province.

According to the ambassador, around half of this amount will be directed to the city of Beira, where it will be used for the construction of a coastal protection wall, the second phase of green infrastructure rehabilitation and social projects in local communities. He stressed that this partnership will provide new opportunities and continue coastal protection in the region.

Of the 45 million euros earmarked for Beira, 30 million will be invested in the city’s coastal protection project. Münch explained that the tender to hire the contractor will be launched in June and the work will begin afterwards.

In addition to Germany’s support, the World Bank is also participating in the coastal protection project in Beira, a city that has been impacted by the effects of climate change, including cyclones Idai, Kenneth and Freddy. The works will include the construction of a reinforced concrete wall and geophysical studies for the construction of dikes to contain the sea water.
