Irregular electricity connections cause EDM losses of 6 million meticais

Ligações eléctricas irregulares causam prejuízo de 6 milhões de meticais à EDM

Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM) announced today that the number of cases of installations with irregular power supply is on the rise, especially in Beira, Sofala province, resulting in significant economic losses.

According to Aníbal Barca, director of EDM’s Customer Service Area, of the 534 installations inspected, 91 irregular connections were identified, causing an estimated loss of six million meticais to the company. During a regional inspection campaign, two individuals were arrested for allegedly facilitating meter tampering for “energy theft”.

“As a result of this campaign, approximately two million meticais were recovered in fines imposed on customers, who were prevented from consuming energy,” said Barca.

These practices have had a negative impact on the targets set for the electricity sector, resulting in significant losses for the company and affecting the development of projects. EDM is committed to combating these irregularities and guaranteeing the integrity and efficiency of its service.

EDM reaffirms its commitment to ensuring legality and safety in the supply of electricity, and will continue to carry out inspections and apply strict measures to curb illegal practices that harm the company and the community in general.
