The Republic of Malawi is facing a sugar shortage crisis and, in response, has opted to import sugar produced in Mozambique. The measure was taken due to the reduction in production capacity of local companies, as a result of challenges posed by climate change.
Since January of this year, Malawi has been suffering from a shortage of sugar, which has caused a significant increase in the price of the product. Faced with this situation, the Malawian government has decided to liberalize the sugar market, issuing import licenses and seeking to diversify sources of supply. The decision aims to increase supply and reduce prices for consumers.
According to the Minister of Industry and Trade, Sosten Gwengwe, the liberalization of the market is a necessary measure to promote greater commercial competitiveness and guarantee access to sugar at affordable prices for the population. In addition, the government has taken strict measures against commercial establishments that over-invoice the price of sugar, with the aim of protecting consumers.
Sugar producers in Mozambique ensure that there is sufficient stock to meet domestic and export needs, despite the stoppage of production in some factories. Maragra Açúcar, located in Manhiça, is one of the country’s main producers and contributes significantly to supplying the market.
Malawi’s import of sugar from Mozambique represents an immediate solution to the supply crisis facing the country.
