ROMPCO aims to maintain uninterrupted gas supply

The Republic of Mozambique Pipeline Investments Company (ROMPCO), a joint venture between the government of South Africa, Mozambique and Sasol, is trying to maintain uninterrupted gas supplies to its customers in 2024, after having achieved the feat in 2023, Africa Review reported on Thursday, February 1.

Motlokwe Sebake, ROMPCO’s general manager, commercial and customer affairs, quoted by the outlet, said that the company is trying to achieve this goal – along with zero fatalities – despite an expected decline in gas supplies from the Pande and Temane fields in Mozambique’s Inhambane province.

“Our strategy for 2024 involves partnering with gas suppliers and users to promptly seek alternative solutions and ensure a continuous and reliable gas supply,” said Motlokwe Sebake, adding that it is also trying to expand its customer base through new sign-ups.

He noted that there has been a growing emphasis on natural gas as a transition or bridge fuel, as it has lower carbon emissions compared to coal and oil. As such, global demand for Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) is growing and it is increasingly being used in power generation, industry and transportation, triggering major investments in LNG infrastructure to facilitate international trade.

“The natural gas industry is currently facing significant challenges, including concerns about the supply of alternative gas, high prices and uncertainties arising from the expected decline of the Pande and Temane fields,” commented Motlokwe Sebake, stressing that “to resolve these issues, the private sector can play a key role, promoting collaboration and actively working to aggregate the supply of the product.”

He explained that this effort has the potential to lower gas prices and facilitate the final investment decision on the Matola Floating Storage Regasification Unit project, off the coast of Mozambique. Alongside these major infrastructure projects, Motlokwe Sebake also said that prioritizing training, sustainability and community empowerment is vital for economic growth.

“Community empowerment, through job creation and support, contributes to economic and general well-being. These initiatives create a win-win scenario, promoting business success and generating jobs for a thriving economy,” said the source.

Motlokwe Sebake said that this year, ROMPCO will be attracting new shippers and customers and that the organization will continue to play a vital role in facilitating the transport of gas to South Africa to meet regional energy needs.
