FNB Mozambique launched to make impact on national market

In the highly competitive and challenging environment of Corporate and Commercial Banking, the Bank has consolidated a client centric position, investing heavily on its strengths and local partnerships.

With a growth in its asset base of over 20% observed over the last 12 months, the Bank is launched on a double-digit upward path over the next 3 to 5 years.

Agility built on international experience

“In the context of a fast-growing economy such as ours, we believe there are opportunities for all players in the financial industry if they seek to leverage their strengths and capabilities and, above all, if they view the Customer as their primary focus,” Janine emphasizes.

As a growing brand, FNB Mozambique’s strength lies in its size, experience and support from a larger group, whose solutions are tailored to the specific needs of the local market.
“It is worth remembering that because we are a relatively young and small institution, our Customers can count on unparalleled proximity when it comes to individual attention from our leadership, reflected in the services they benefit from in their Corporate and Commercial accounts,” Jaime pointed out.

About the solidity of the Institution, “of course, being considered as an increasingly relevant Bank in the market fills us with pride, as well as the strength, influence and support we have from the FirstRand Group, a major presence in the African continent. Additionally, we believe we are equipped with the necessary tools to support our Clients with solutions that allow us to grow together. Our aspiration to create a culture that encourages innovative thinking as well as the global and regional research and data analysis we carry out prove this.

Indeed, investing in top-notch expertise, attracting new skills and encouraging self-development and growth are very critical valences in the Bank’s relationship and partnerships with its clients. “Environment, social development and governance (ESG) is a key focus and requirement across all sectors and industries, we look forward to bringing this approach in our transactions in the Mozambican market, backed by the experience of our Group.”, said Janine.

Prioritize partnerships and local people

Importantly, as fast-growing players, FNBM values the considerable client portfolio developed in a short period of time. “We continue to cultivate partnerships with local clients, industry players and service providers in order to provide corporate and commercial banking services that are unique in Mozambique. It is important to understand that we are betting heavily on our market position through a targeted sectoral and industry approach, not trying to be all things to all people. For us, it makes more sense to develop corporate and intra-corporate relationships with value propositions and strategies focused on key sectors such as Agriculture, Logistics, and Diversified Industries, including downstream Oil & Gas,” clarifies CCIB Director, Janine Goosen.

In parallel, and with a view to supporting the economy and domestic companies, the Bank seeks to be close to the entire value chain of the companies with which it works, in order to support its employees, suppliers, contractors, and customers, which is evident in its customer-centric relationship model.

“It is important to remember that, considering our agility and connection to a global network, we are able to provide access to cutting-edge banking services, supported by tested and applied knowledge. Our upward journey speaks for itself: we are committed to invest in Mozambique. We look forward to growing side by side with our current and future Partners and Customers in this high potential market.” concludes Janine Goosen.

V Mozambique – Portugal Bilateral Summit today at FACIM

The V Summit aims at deepening bilateral relations and signing of several cooperation instruments.

The event was supposed to be attended by the Portuguese Prime Minister, António Costa, but he had to cancel his visa to allow him to be permanently available in the country, due to the forecasts of a worsening risk of rural fire in Portugal.

During the V Summit, businessmen from both countries are expected to exchange experiences in various sectors of the economy.

BCI brings together economic agents in Maputo

The Ambassador of Portugal in Mozambique, António Costa Moura, and the Presidents of the Executive Committees (PCE) of CGD and BPI, Paulo Macedo and João Pedro Oliveira e Costa, respectively, were present at the meeting.

The PCE of BCI, Francisco Costa, recalled, on the occasion, the 25 years that BCI is now celebrating, underlining the growth of the Bank and its contribution to the growth of Mozambique.

He mentioned, in effect, the expansion of BCI?s network, the largest in the country, which has been actively promoting financial inclusion of the population, the access to banking services for citizens and micro and small businesses, and the development of rural districts.

He also said that BCI has managed to conquer the trust and preference of the main Mozambican institutions, companies and families, “with whom we have been establishing a true commitment of partnership for development, facts that we are very proud of”.

He indicated that throughout the country BCI is attentive and available to collaborate in the effort that government entities, regulators and business associations have been undertaking to stimulate the activity of companies (including SMEs), aiming to provide business opportunities to the local business community, in order to promote and consolidate the foundations for the existence of a strong national business community, leveraging the immense potential that the country has and that sustain the growing interest of investors who direct their investment projects here.

He emphasized that due to its idiosyncrasy, BCI has a profound knowledge of the Mozambican and Portuguese markets, making it an ideal partner to ensure the bridge between Portuguese companies investing in Mozambique and Mozambican companies with interests in Portugal.

Hydroelectric generation: HCB reaches 7,965 GWh in the first semester

In a press release, HCB states that this hydroelectric production was achieved without the occurrence of work accidents and that it exceeds the most optimistic expectations thanks to the availability of water and the equipment for production, conversion and transport of energy, and the performance of human resources.

“The production of the first semester of 2022, translates into very significant and relevant revenues for the financing of the rehabilitation projects that are underway throughout the production chain. On the other hand, they allow Cabora Bassa to continue to be a strategic and valuable asset in the national and regional energy matrix, and in the socio-economic development of Mozambique through the contributions it makes to the economy. We have the duty to manage and operate the company in a judicious, responsible and transparent manner so that it achieves its objectives,” said Boavida Muhambe, chairman of the board of directors, quoted in the statement.

In terms of modernization of the power generation park, the enterprise continues with the rehabilitation projects planned for the five generator groups with installed capacity of 2075 MW, whose interventions may lead to an increase in the nominal power of each group.

In the area of conversion and transmission equipment, subsequent steps are being taken to enter phase 3 of the Songo Converter Substation rehabilitation project, brownfield-3, which will not only increase the useful life of the equipment, but also improve its performance indicators to international standard levels.

In relation to the water resources of the reservoir, the document states that on 30 June 2022, the level was 324.63 metres above average sea level, which corresponds to 93% of its useful storage capacity, thus permitting normal operation of the undertaking and implementation of the generation plant’s operating plans.

HCB also says that reaching these storage levels results from the judicious measures adopted during the last rainy season, in which, in view of the occurrence of tropical storm Ana, in January, and the tropical depression Dumako, in February, no additional discharges were made, contributing to the minimization of the impacts of floods and inundations in the Lower Zambezi.

Regarding the HCB shares in the Mozambique Stock Exchange, during the 1st semester of the year they performed below the price of the Public Offering of 2019, except for the first fortnight of January, in which they remained firm at three meticais per share.

However, the shares remain appetizing in the secondary market generating considerable transactions, and on the current July 11, the company proceeds to pay a dividend amounting to 3.7 billion meticais, which corresponds to 36.4% of the Company’s profits.

“This amount of dividend represents a 26% increase if compared to the amounts paid in 2021,” the statement said.

M-pesa, mkesh and e-Mola are already interconnected

Making payments by electronic means was hampered by the lack of this interconnection. This reduced the use of electronic means of payment and greatly affected the access to and use of financial services by the majority of the population.

The interconnection of the operations of mkesh, m-pesa and e-Mola marks a milestone that will drive the expansion of financial services.

This achievement enables the achievement of one of the main goals of the National Strategy for Financial Inclusion 2016-2022, which will certainly make an undeniable contribution to boosting electronic payments in the country.

Vodacom invests in technological innovation to better serve customers

To maintain this aspiration, Vodacom has several challenges, including network expansion, 5G implementation and investment in the Internet of Things (IoT). In 2022, the operator will continue to expand its 4G network to about 400 stations where this technology is not currently available, consolidating its position as the operator with more 4G stations in Mozambique.

By March 2023, Vodacom has planned to install 200 new rural stations distributed in several provinces. These will be completely powered by solar energy, which in turn shows its commitment to increasingly adopt renewable energy in its solutions.

Vodacom is investing in 5G technology seeking better processing time for downloads and uploads, faster data transfer speed per second, and savings of up to 90% in the energy consumption of the devices. In addition, the operator is also investing in the Internet of Things (IoT), a solution that offers a range of applications for various sectors, including the development of smart cities.

The Municipality of Chimoio, in Manica province is already making use of Vodacom’s IoT solutions to ensure sustainable and real-time asset management.

Later this year, Vodacom plans to install more than 500km of fiber optics. It is part of the operator’s ambition to connect Maputo to Palma by a fiber optic network infrastructure capable of meeting its current needs, as well as the challenges that the 5G network will bring.

As a way of contributing to the use of digital and technological platforms in Mozambican society, the mobile operator has invested in the “Faz Crescer” program. With this initiative, the operator is equipping different secondary school units in the country with digital laboratories, equipped with computers and free internet.  Last year 50 schools were equipped, which positively impacted the lives of 24,638 students and teachers who are direct beneficiaries of computer labs and connectivity, used during ICT classes. Through this project, Vodacom aims that by 2025, at least 100 schools will be equipped with computers and free internet, benefiting 600,000 people, including students, teachers and other members of the communities.

Currently, Vodacom employs about 400 employees in the technological areas, of which 90 are women. To raise women’s interest in technology areas, the operator has developed several programs to promote women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) careers. Code Like a Girl, an initiative that empowers girls, with a view to increasing their knowledge and skills, through free programming classes.

Along with this initiative, it launched the project “Science is All Good for me too”, to encourage high school students, especially in the 10th grade, to consider alternative careers in STEM areas, through the promotion of vocational guidance talks, held by Vodacom employees trained in these areas. The operator also launched the program “I am the Face of Technology”, with the aim of bringing women to the forefront in this area, deconstructing the idea that men are the standard when it comes to technologies.

Vodacom is, at this moment, the operator that keeps the country connected with private VMware clouds, which gives the telephony more agility in the services offered to customers, in an increasingly competitive market. Incidentally, the operator won the 17th edition of the VMware 2021 award for Africa, which recognizes outstanding achievements by its customers in solving business problems using VMware technology. Vodacom received the award for providing superior digital voice and data solutions through the development of agile and flexible applications for its growing customer base.

As a result of these innovations, the report of an audit conducted this year on the three operators operating in the country, by Umlaut – a leading German mobile network testing and benchmarking firm, ranked Vodacom as the operator with the highest score in voice and data services.

“Vodacom Mozambique continues to be at the forefront in terms of offering products and services that meet the growing customer demand for transformative solutions. We are the leading mobile network provider in the country, with over seven million subscribers. Since our establishment in 2003, we have defined as our main objective to provide a reliable mobile and data service, as well as introduce new communication technologies to benefit Mozambique and Mozambicans,” said Rui Lousã, Chief Technology Officer of Vodacom Mozambique.

The source concluded that “We are moving towards digital transformation, which will impact on the improvement of our services and service channels, in order to enhance the experience of our customers. For this to happen, we have been investing for the past 3 years in “building” a new area within Vodacom, dedicated to Software development. We believe in local talent, so we have been trying to recruit the best talent in the local market as well as associate ourselves in several training programs with foreign partners such as AWS and Cloud Guru, so that we can retrain part of our team in these new technologies. We have also made some of these programs available to the general public, such as recently the partnership with Udacity where we made available “scholarships” for Mozambican women between 20 and 35 years old.”

IMF may give extra financial help to the country

Abebe Selassie, director of the African department of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), said that the institution it represents can provide extra financial aid and gave positive note to the measures announced.

“I think the direction Mozambique has been taking is right,” he said.
The IMF on May 9 approved a new financing program for Mozambique worth $470 million through 2025, with $91 million being made available immediately.

“We recognize these challenges and stand ready to assist governments, including with additional financing” around measures that can “cushion the effects of this crisis on the most vulnerable,” he noted.

“This cost of living crisis affects the population in an amplified way here, because people have fewer resources and resilience to cope with such a shock,” he said.

Selassie is visiting Mozambique “to learn more about the situation in the country and to convey this to the management” of the IMF.

Government mobilizes more than 100 million dollars to face inflation

“The Government has mobilized resources to ensure that there is stability in public transport prices, having already 50 million dollars for this purpose,” said Max Tonela, Minister of Economy and Finance.

Max Tonela was speaking at a press conference with Abebe Selassie, Director of the African department of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), who is visiting Mozambique to assess the scenario and learn about the Government’s measures.

The Minister of Economy and Finance, attributed for the first time a number to the “passenger subsidy” that has been announced since a week ago by the Mozambican authorities, but about which details about the application are pending.

“Even if there are additional increases” in fuel prices, “the populations in urban centers” will be “protected, at least for the next six months,” Tonela said, with the prospect that the situation will improve in the meantime – that is, that oil will once again trade below $100 per barrel.

“In addition, we have mobilized $85 million” to “finance more disadvantaged families, increasing the number of households covered and the amount to be allocated” under the State’s social support, especially in peri-urban and rural areas.

These measures are in addition to reformulations in the calculation of fuel prices, decided by the Government since March to mitigate the three increases this year, Tonela stressed, adding that other support may be discussed.
