He highlighted Mozambique’s successful participation in the Belt and Road Forum, held in October in Beijing, in which the country actively contributed with a delegation led by Prime Minister Adriano Maleiane.

During the meeting, President Nyusi expressed his condolences for the loss of former Chinese Prime Minister Li Keqiang, reaffirming the bonds of solidarity between the two countries. Hélder Injojo, first vice-president of the Assembly of the Republic of Mozambique, who accompanied the Chinese delegation, presented the positive results of the two-day visit, emphasizing closer relations between the legislative bodies.

Gyaltsen highlighted the importance of the meeting with the President of the Assembly of the Republic, Esperança Bias, in which they discussed relevant legislative issues.

The Chinese delegation’s visit provided an opportunity not only to strengthen ties between the parliaments, but also to deepen the historical and traditional links between the peoples of Mozambique and China, which date back to the beginnings of the armed struggle for national liberation and have been consolidated over the 48 years of the country’s independence.
The delegation, led by Losang Gyaltsen, ended its visit to Mozambique yesterday after significant exchanges on legislative cooperation and strengthening bilateral relations. The meeting highlights Mozambique’s continued commitment to pursuing strategic collaborations and seizing global opportunities to promote sustainable development.
Importantly, during its participation in the Belt and Road Forum in October, Mozambique shared its experience in green development, emphasizing resilience in the face of recurring climate challenges and reinforcing the country’s commitment to environmentally sustainable practices.

PROLER: Developing energy production from renewable energies

PROLER: Desenvolver a produção de energia a partir de energias renováveis

Demand for electricity is expected to continue to grow at an annual rate of 7-8%, as the country strives to achieve the ambitious goal of providing universal access to electricity by 2030.

In order to achieve this goal, while limiting its environmental impact, the European Union, as part of its PROMOVE Energy strategy, is supporting the Government of Mozambique with the PROLER program (Promotion of Renewable Energy Auctions). This program aims to increase energy production from renewable energy sources.

PROLER represents a new paradigm that promotes transparent and competitive auctions with the aim of offering the lowest possible tariffs to end consumers.

In another approach, PROLER also has the ambition to support the creation of attractive conditions for the private sector to accelerate and expand its investment in renewable energy projects in Mozambique.

In terms of impacts, the first result of the Dondo Solar Power Plant pilot project proves that the proposed scheme is attractive enough to leverage private investment.

It is also expected that this program will contribute to reducing greenhouse gases. The construction of the first three photovoltaic plants is expected to reduce emissions by 25,000 tons of CO2/year and provide energy for the rural consumption of 240,000 households.

These findings were made today by the PROLER representative, who was speaking on the sidelines of the 3rd Business Conference on Renewable Energies in Mozambique.

The conference is organized by the Lusophone Renewable Energy Association (ALER) together with the Mozambican Renewable Energy Association (AMER), with the support of GET.invest Mozambique, funded by the European Union and Germany and part of the European GET.invest programme.

Mozambique will be the fifth fastest-growing economy in the world by 2023

The country is set to achieve remarkable economic growth of 7% this year, making it the 5th fastest growing economy in the world by 2023, according to a report by the International Monetary Fund, IMF. The figures reflect the optimistic projections previously released by the Mozambican government, which had already revised growth expectations upwards, surpassing the initial target of 5% set in the Economic and Social Plan and State Budget (PESOE) for 2023.
The IMF’s analysis endorses the government’s optimistic view, reaffirming the forecast of 7% growth in Gross Domestic Product (GDP), solidifying Mozambique’s position as the country with the highest economic growth in sub-Saharan Africa this year. This rate is more than double the average of the 46 countries in the region, estimated at 3.3%.

The prominence of Mozambique’s economic performance places the country at the top of the list of the most dynamic African economies in 2023, behind only Libya, which projects a remarkable growth of 12.5%, recovering from a sharp drop of -9.6% in 2022, according to the report.
Mozambique’s leading position in sub-Saharan Africa is confirmed by the report, which ranks the country ahead of significant economies such as the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Ivory Coast, Rwanda and Ethiopia, forming the regional top five with growth rates ranging from 6.7% to 6.1%.
In comparison, other major African economies show more modest growth, with Nigeria estimated at 2.9%, Angola at 1.3% and South Africa at 0.9%. In the context of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP), Guinea-Bissau and Cape Verde outperform the region’s average, while São Tomé and Príncipe and Equatorial Guinea face challenges with growth rates of 0.5% and -6.2%, respectively.

Globally, Mozambique’s economic performance also stands out. If the IMF’s forecasts are confirmed, the country will be the second fastest growing economy on the continent, behind only Libya. Internationally, Mozambique ranks among the top five rising economies, along with Guyana, Samoa, Fiji and Armenia, with all economies projected to grow at an impressive rate of 7%.
This economic performance by Mozambique, well above the world average of 3%, and outperforming even major powers such as China and India, signals a promising scenario for the country. Robust growth reinforces Mozambique’s position as an important player on the global economic scene, attracting the attention of investors and highlighting the country’s potential to drive sustainable development in the region.
